Secondo gli studiosi, l’opera mostrerebbe affinità con la ritrattistica del bergamasco, ma anche riflessi di impronta tintorettesca. L’ambito lombardo, e in particolare bergamasco, resta il contesto più calzante per il ritratto di questo anziano personaggio, che affronta l’osservatore con severa sobrietà. La posa, il seggiolone borchiato, l’abito nero con colletto bianco e l’ambientazione rimandano all’entroterra lombardo-veneto del secondo Cinquecento.

According to scholars, the work shows affinities with Bergamasque portraiture but also reflects Tintoretto’s influence. The Lombard, and particularly Bergamasque, context remains the most fitting for the portrait of this elderly man, who confronts the viewer with stern sobriety.
The pose, the studded armchair, the black garment with white collar, and the setting refer to the Lombard-Venetian hinterland of the late sixteenth century.
