Questo dipinto è stato identificato come l’Artemisia citata negli inventari dei quadri ritrovati nella casa del pittore Francesco Cairo al momento della sua morte, con il titolo “Artemisia con urna”. La scena rappresenta un episodio dal forte valore simbolico: la donna, Artemisia, è raffigurata accanto a un’urna, sulla quale appoggia il braccio. Secondo la tradizione, da quell’urna ella bevve le ceneri del marito defunto, per diventare lei stessa la sua “tomba vivente”. Un gesto estremo e struggente, che sottolinea la forza dei sentimenti e la drammaticità della vicenda. Il dipinto appartiene alla fase matura della produzione di Cairo, subito dopo il suo soggiorno romano. In quel periodo l’artista aderì con convinzione al barocco italiano, caratterizzato da intensità espressiva, teatralità e grande attenzione agli effetti di luce e di colore. L’opera esprime ancora oggi tutta la forza narrativa e la raffinatezza pittorica.
This painting has been identified as the Artemisia mentioned in the inventories of paintings found in the house of painter Francesco Cairo at the time of his death, under the title “Artemisia with urn.” The scene depicts an episode of strong symbolic value: the woman, Artemisia, is portrayed next to an urn, on which she rests her arm. According to tradition, from that urn she drank the ashes of her deceased husband, thus becoming his “living tomb.” An extreme and poignant gesture, highlighting the power of her emotions and the drama of the event. The painting belongs to the mature phase of Cairo’s production, shortly after his stay in Rome (1637–1638). During that period, the artist wholeheartedly embraced the Italian Baroque, characterized by expressive intensity, theatricality, and great attention to the effects of light and color. Even today, the work conveys all its narrative power and painterly refinement.
